WELCOA
When a Maine business joins the Wellness Council of Maine, they also join the Wellness Council of America. Although we have been affiliated with WELCOA since 2003, in 2008 we were licensed to provide statewide coverage, thus servicing all WELCOA members (which are, in turn, WLCME members!) in Maine. Here is a brief overview:
The Wellness Council of America (WELCOA) was established as a national not-for-profit organization in the mid 1980's through the efforts of a number of forward-thinking business and health leaders. Drawing on the vision originally set forth by William Kizer, Sr., Chairman Emeritus of Central States Indemnity, and WELCOA founding Directors that included Dr. Louis Sullivan, former Secretary of Health and Human Services, and Warren Buffet, Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, WELCOA has helped influence the face of workplace wellness in the U.S.
Today, WELCOA has become one of the most respected resources for workplace wellness in America. With a membership in excess of 3,200 organizations, WELCOA is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of all working Americans. Located in America's heartland, WELCOA makes its national headquarters in one of America's healthiest business communities Omaha, Nebraska.
WELCOA’s Beliefs
Predicated on improving the health and well-being of working Americans throughout the United States, WELCOA adheres to a steadfast set of beliefs. Indeed, they believe:
- Healthcare costs are an issue of significant concern.
- A healthy workforce is essential to America's continued growth and prosperity.
- Much of the illness in the U.S. is directly preventable.
- The workplace is an ideal setting to address health and well-being.
- That workplace wellness programs can transform corporate culture and change lives.
WELCOA’s Mission
As one of the nation's premier resources for workplace wellness, WELCOA’s mission is to serve business leaders, workplace wellness practitioners, public health professionals and consultants of all kinds by:
- Promoting corporate membership;
- Producing leading-edge worksite wellness publications and health information;
- Conducting trainings that help worksite wellness practitioners create and sustain results-oriented wellness programs;
- Creating resources that promote healthier lifestyles for all working Americans.
Mentoring Program
The Wellness Council Mentoring Program was formalized in 2005. This innovative program is one of many ways we set ourselves apart in the field of worksite wellness. Our objectives are to increase the participants' network of personal resources available to assist with the Well Workplace Award application process. Companies completing the application are provided with an opportunity to have a mentor work with them to provide guidelines, resources and tools for keeping the application development on track and on target. Practical, first hand know-how by Award Winning mentors greatly enhances the award application process.
If you have had a workplace wellness program in place for at least one year and are interested in applying for the Mentoring Program, please contact Willow at 207.947.0307 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
What is a Well Workplace?
WELCOA defines a Well Workplace as an organization that has embraced the responsibility for maximizing the health and well-being of their employees. Companies who receive the Well Workplace designation are known as "America's Healthiest Companies" because their wellness programs produce results. Well Workplace is not a competition whereby only a small number of companies can achieve an award, rather it is a recognition program where an award can be achieved by any company, small or large, meeting the challenging standards set forth by WELCOA. This development and implementation is measured through the incorporation of seven critical benchmarks, defining best practices in workplace wellness, which drive the entire process of building a "Well Workplace".
